Evergreen Cemetery is owned by the City of Colorado Springs. The plots and coping walls are not. Upon the sale of the lots in the sections, those areas including coping walls around family plots, become private property. Unless there is a perpetual care agreement, the care of the stones and walls fall to the descendants. There are very few descendants of the oldest areas still around.
The cemetery waters the grass and mows the lawn. It costs a tremendous amount of money for just those two things. Those costs are covered through the sales of plots and funeral costs. There are no extra funds for renovations. The Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society is a group of volunteers whose goal it is to raise money for these projects and spearhead their completion. All donations are used for that purpose. It buys tools and equipment, materials for repairs, training funds for classes involving labor intensive work, and memorial resetting and foundation repair. We are still in our infancy and need all the help we can get. Remember all donations are tax deductible and we are registered with the Secretary of State. Please support us!
